Team Aloha Aina Tees: Pauahi

Bernice Pauahi Bishop (1831-1884) was the last aliʻi of the Kamehameha line. By the time of her death she had become the largest landowner in Hawaii. As other aliʻi before her, when she died she left her wealth for the benefit of her people.

During her lifetime Pauahi witnessed the devastation of the Hawaiian population to disease and Hawaiian language, culture, and traditions decline with it. Seeking to leave a legacy with the greatest, lasting impact for her people, she focused on providing education. Pauahi bequeathed her estate to create the Kamehameha Schools and provide an endowment for the institution.

Her husband carried out her wishes and in 1887 Kamehameha Schools opened its doors. Pauahiʻs jersey #87 celebrates the fruition of her enduring love for her Kanaka Maoli.
